The Marion Police Department says a man was accidently shot by his 3-year-old child on Sunday afternoon. The man is expected to recover from his wounds.
On September 23, 2012 at just after 3:00 pm, officers responded to the 458 Scranton Avenue after receiving a call that a man had been shot. Officers arrived on scene and say they found 24-year-old Walter J. Call III with a single gunshot wound to his right side just above the belt line.
Call was transported to Marion General Hospital by the Marion City Fire Department’s emergency squad. He was later flown by medical helicopter to Grant Hospital in Columbus to undergo surgery.
The case remains under investigation, but police say they learned that Call had apparently been accidentally shot by his 2 year 11 month old son. Investigators say the youngster had obtained the gun while Call was asleep on the couch.
The only person in the house at the time of the shooting was a 5 year old daughter. No one else was injured.
Police say they recovered the handgun that was used in the shooting and removed several other guns from the home. Marion County Children Services was notified.
The case is being reviewed for the filing of possible charges.
Police officials are reminding gun owners that they are responsible to make sure their weapons are secured to the point that it is unlikely a child could obtain a loaded weapon or obtain a weapon and ammunition and accidentally injury themselves or others.
