The Marion Police Department says a man reported he was shot Wednesday, October 24, but investigators say the information the man has provided appears to be misleading and are asking the public for help in gathering additional details.
At 10:30pm Wednesday, police responded to Marion General Hospital where a shooting victim was being treated for injuries. Police spoke with the 22-year-old victim who sustained a single gunshot wound to the upper leg.
The victim, who police are not identifying at this point, told investigators that he was walking north in the area of the State Street overpass when he noticed that a male subject was following him on foot. The victim alleged that this was the last thing he could remember prior to being transported to the hospital. The victim claimed to have no knowledge of who the suspect is of any recollection of how or why the shooting took place.
The victim told police that he believes the subject that was following him was the person who shot him. The victim described the suspect as a black male, approximately 6’02” tall, shoulder length dreadlocks, and a dark colored flat billed ball cap.
“At this stage of the investigation, it would appear that the victim may be providing us with some misleading information,” stated Lt. B.J. Gruber of the Marion Police Department. “We searched the alleged shooting location and spoke with several neighbors in the area, none of which reported hearing any gunshots or seeing any unusual activity.”
Gruber said that although it is clear the victim had been shot, the circumstances leading up to that event continue to be under investigation.
If anyone has information on this case, they are urged to contact the Marion Police Department at 740-387-2525 or the TIPS Line at 740-375-TIPS.
