Marion Unemployment Rate Lowest Since June 2008

The unemployment rate for Marion County reached its lowest level since June 2008. The rate in September was 7.1 percent down from 7.4 percent in August and down from 9.2 percent a year ago. The decrease was directly due to fewer people in the workforce compared with August.

The September 2012 Marion County workforce was 29,600 with 2,100 unemployed. The workforce number was down by 200 people and 100 more people reported being unemployed compared with August.

In June 2008, the rate was 6.9 percent with an available workforce of 32,600. 2,200 people reported being out of work at that time.

On a positive note, despite the slip in September, the number of people unemployed in Marion County is the lowest it has been since May 2008.

All counties surrounding Marion also reported lower unemployment rates with Delaware County the lowest and Crawford County being the highest.

The situation in Marion County mirrored the statewide results as Ohio’s unemployment rate was 7.0 percent in September, down from 7.2 percent in August. The rate improvement came as Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 12,800 over the month from the revised 5,190,000 in August to 5,177,200 in September.

The U.S. unemployment rate for September was 7.8 percent, down from 8.1 percent in August, and down from 9.0 percent in September 2011.
