Police Say Child Abductor Report was False

The Marion Police Department issued a release Tuesday saying that a child made up a report of a man attempting to abduct her. The incident gained the attention of Columbus media because the description of the incident was similar to an ongoing case in Delaware County.

On September 19, 2012, an incident was reported to the police department that a white male in the Libby Lane/Paula Drive area had attempted to get a 9-year-old female into his car.

Marion Police Lt. Mark Beaschler issued a release saying the department learned Tuesday that the incident in Marion was fabricated and the whole report was made up. The description was based upon a male individual that was out checking his mail near the child’s bus stop.

Beaschler says the child was not aware of the Delaware case when she made her report. It was simply a coincidence.

The updated report will be forwarded to the Marion County Juvenile Prosecutor for their review.
