Through what is described as an ideal blend of medicine with technology, OhioHealth Marion General Hospital is now part of the OhioHealth electronic monitoring system for critically ill patients.
MGH officials say that as a result, the eICU® (electronic Intensive Care Unit) technology at the hospital is now providing “clinical expertise and cutting-edge technologies to improve critical care delivery.” The eICU® remotely monitors critical care patients and adds an extra level of patient care via telemedicine using specialized software and hardware.
“The key to Marion General’s medical and nursing staff use of eICU® is assistance with patient management by board-certified critical care physicians and critical care nurses,” says Dr. Richard Flaksman, vice president of medical affairs for OhioHealth Marion General Hospital. “It is not designed to replace the care provided by local primary care, specialist, or critical care physicians, but rather assist in the management of the patient to the extent the physician desires.”
Critical care physician specialists, referred to as eICU® Intensivists, are available every day of the year from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. to assist with management of patients throughout the night. Experienced critical care nurses, available throughout the daytime hours as well, monitor patients and provide support and assistance to the ICU nurses at Marion General at a level determined by a patient’s physician.
“The eICU® provides a unique blend of advanced technology and monitoring combined with hands-on critical care from our team here at Marion General,” says Danielle Trachtenberg, nurse manager of ICU. “Through eICU® technology, critical care nurses and physicians provide a ‘second set of eyes’ and are available for consultation and to provide orders as needed at night.”
The eICU® technology is available in critical care units throughout the OhioHealth system, including Riverside Methodist, Grant Medical Center, Doctors Hospital, Grady Memorial, Dublin Methodist, Hardin Memorial, and now Marion General Hospital.
