The Marion Police Department says a routine traffic stop turned into a chase that ended with the help of a citizen and resulted in two men being arrested for multiple charges include drug trafficking.
On Wednesday, November 7, at about 9:30am, Patrolman Isom stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation in the 100 block of North Main Street. During the stop, Isom said he identified several criminal indicators of drug activity.
According to police, the driver of the stopped vehicle took off running, but was captured about six blocks away with the assistance of a citizen who happened to be driving past the scene. The driver, 30-year-old Bruce D. Baker, was initially arrested for obstructing official business, but when he was transported to the multi-county jail it was discovered that he was concealing heroin. Police say the heroin was packaged for individual sale and was hidden in his underwear.
Police say there was also other drug paraphernalia and trafficking supplies in the vehicle. The passenger, 24-year-old Rashawn D. Thomas was also arrested and taken to the Multi-County Correctional Center.
Both suspects are from the Chicago area, but currently reside in Marion.
The case was forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for formal charges which may include aggravated trafficking, drug possession, conveyance into a detention center, and tampering with evidence.
