A Marion Police Officer was in the right place at the right time Wednesday when he noticed a suspicious person. That man ended up being arrested for a robbery that had taken place just moments before he was spotted by the officer.
On December 26, 2012, Ptl. Ralston of the Marion Police Department was on routine patrol when he observed a man who began running away from him in the 100 block of Barnhart Street. As Ralston radioed dispatchers to advise them of the man who was running through yards, a call was received from the Marathon Gas Station, 885 East Center, reporting a robbery with the suspect matching the same description of the man running.
The suspect was tracked by Ralston to a house at 226 Chicago Avenue. Officers surrounded the house and the suspect, 28-year-old Walter Kehren, was arrested without incident.
Officers said they recovered money and a BB pistol that looked similar to a semi-automatic handgun.
Investigators say Kehren stole money from the cash drawer at the gas station, but that no gun was displayed during the theft and no one was injured. Officials say Kehren was also linked to a similar theft on December 21, 2012 at the Certified station at 976 East Center Street.
Kehren was transported to the Multi-County Correctional Center on felony charges related to both robberies.
