A Marion church is opening their doors and holding what they hope will be an annual event to provide a ”Family Christmas” on Christmas Day for those who are less fortunate, presently homeless, suffering through any type of life situation that is causing them despair, or are simply alone for the holidays.
Apex Church in downtown Marion will be serving a full Christmas dinner and will have gifts for all. In addition they will have giveaways, games, friendship, movies, fun, snacks, and more. The event will run on Christmas Day from 10:00am to 4:00pm at the APEX Life (old Mays Jewelers) building on West Center Street across from the Chase Bank building.
Volunteers are ”shutting down” the Marion Shelter Program and transporting all the residents to their event, in part to allow for the shelter staff to have a day to be with their families on Christmas. While they also invited referrals from the Salvation Army and the Marion Area Counseling Center, no one will be turned away.
The event started off as an idea for a small gathering involving the homeless shelter, but Randy Dawson of Apex Church says it ballooned through the energy and generosity of volunteers and donors.
“To mobilize 45 volunteers and have enough food and gifts donated for what looks like possibly 100 guests is nothing short of miraculous,” said Dawson. “The response from people wanting to help and donate items and resources has been overwhelming. This has allowed for us to be able to serve more.”
