The Ohio State Highway Patrol says two men are listed in stable condition in a Columbus hospital after they crashed their vehicle into a train in Prospect Monday evening.
The crash occurred at 7:22 pm on February 18, 2013 and involved a 2009 Pontiac G-6 driven by 18 year-old Connor Helman of Prospect. The passenger was 21 year-old Brandon Phillips of Richwood.
The Patrol says preliminary investigation indicates that Helman was traveling eastbound on Park Street in Prospect. A CSX Transportation train was traveling southbound on the tracks approaching Park Street. Helman attempted to cross the tracks and the front of the Pontiac struck the side of the lead engine of the train as it passed over Park Street.
Helman and Phillips were trapped in the vehicle. Battle Run Fire and EMS freed the occupants and transported them to the Battle Run Fire Station awaiting Med Flight. Helman and Phillips were then flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus where they were later listed in stable condition. There were no injuries reported by CSX personnel.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department, Battle Run Volunteer Fire Department and Delaware County EMS. The crash remains under investigation.
