The Marion Palace Theatre will stage the Tony award-winning Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” for three performances. Featuring a local cast, show dates are scheduled for February 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and February 17 at 2:00 p.m.
Fiddler on the Roof was one of the first Broadway musicals to deal with serious issues such as discrimination, poverty and holding on to one’s beliefs.
Set in 1905 in a little Jewish village in Russia, the story follows Tevye, a poor dairyman and his attempts to preserve his family’s traditions in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia.
Tevye struggles to hold onto his religion, his Russian-Jewish customs and retain his position as head of the household in selecting his daughters’ husbands. But when Tevye’s daughter Tzeitel, wants to marry a poor tailor instead of the middle-aged butcher her father has chosen for her, he is forced to choose between his daughter’s happiness and his culture’s beloved traditions. As he reevaluates his traditions, he tolerates opposition from his wife, Golde, the matchmaker, Yente, and the townspeople of his tight-knit Jewish community.
While the Jews struggle with change among themselves, they also struggle with persecution and eventual eviction by the Russians. The people of Teyve’s town find their future is “as shaky as a fiddler on the roof.”
An international blockbuster since it premiered on Broadway in 1964, “Fiddler on the Roof” features a cast of over 60 members, performing such beloved and timeless songs as “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Matchmaker” and “Sunrise Sunset.”
“Fiddler on the Roof is a beautiful story that celebrates the power of tradition and embraces the necessity for change. Audiences will relate to the universal theme of conflict between new and old, parent and child,” said Bev Ford, Executive Director of the Marion Palace Theatre. “Fiddler on the Roof is filled with laughter, warmth, and inspiration for the whole family.”
The cast includes veteran performers Brad Bebout (Tevye, the dairyman), Danielle Davis (Yente, the matchmaker), and Daniel Bradshaw (Perchik, the student).
The Marion Palace Theatre production will be directed by Greg Patterson. Rick Baird will conduct the orchestra. Kim Bradshaw and Amanda Zucker are choreographers. Vocal direction is by Dee Ehrman. April Short is the assistant to Mr. Patterson and producer. Costumes are by Susan Wenig and set design is by Don Wolfe.
Whirlpool Corporation and Marion Community Foundation’s Mary H. Hollaway Palace Theatre Fund co-sponsor this summer musical with additional partnerships from Dr. Brian & Dee Ehrman and Mike & Kerry Ward.
