Marion County Recycling and Litter Prevention’s Executive Director Angela Carbetta handed out Green Awards to several individuals and companies during the Marion County Commissioners’ meeting Thursday morning. In addition, the Commissioners issued a proclamation in honor of Earth Week.
The awards were given to those that have helped further the mission over the past year of living in a more environmentally friendly way. Each year they are awarded as part of Earth Week activities in Marion.
Those awarded Thursday included:

- Marion Star
- ClearChannel Marion
- Michelle Mattix
- Mary Jo Mundy
- Bungie North America
- Joey Sink-Oiler
- Pat Upp’s Woodfired Pizza
Earth Week activities include a cleanup in downtown Marion Thursday at noon, a prayer service on Sunday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and a day of events on Monday at the campus of Ohio State Marion and Marion Technical College.
The following is the text of the proclamation approved by the Marion County Commissioners.
WHEREAS; Earth Day was introduced by US Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 to “tap the environmental concerns of the general public and bring those issues into the political arena;” and
WHEREAS; the signers of the first Earth Day proclamation stated that an “international Earth Day each year can provide a special time to draw people together in appreciation of their mutual home, Planet Earth,” and
WHEREAS; strong environmental leadership is necessary at every level of government, with all public officials and citizens committed to conservation and sustainability; and
WHEREAS; beautification and clean-up initiatives are known to reduce crime rates and increase property values; and
WHEREAS; recycling preserves natural resources, saves energy, reduces pollution, conserves landfill space, and contributes to sustainable economic growth; and
WHEREAS; personal and collective efforts to “Keep Marion County Beautiful” contribute to public health, sustainable economic growth and civic pride.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED; that the Board of Marion County Commissioners hereby declares “Earth Week 2013: Green Goes With Everything” and asks the community to participate in recycling and litter prevention activities befitting the occasion.
