The unemployment rate for Marion County dropped over a half percent to 7.6 percent in March 2013, down from 8.2 percent in February. The decrease comes during the same month as when Ohio’s statewide unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.1 percent.
The local rate has dropped quickly after shooting up 2 percent between December and January when it hit 9.0 percent. The decrease in March comes as Marion’s available workforce increased by 200 to a total of 29,200. Locally there are 27,000 people employed and 2,200 still looking for work. The number of unemployed decreased by 200 in March. Put all those numbers together and they show that 400 more people were employed in March.
The rate for Marion County is down from a year ago when it stood at 8.1 percent.
In the surrounding counties, only Wyandot County saw as large of a decrease as was seen in Marion. The percentages for area counties are below.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 7.1 percent in March, unchanged from the revised February rate, according to data released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 20,400 over the month from the revised 5,197,300 in February to 5,176,900 in March.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in March was 406,000, up from 405,000 in February. The number of unemployed has decreased by 19,000 in the past 12 months from 425,000. The March unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 7.4 percent in March 2012.
The U.S. unemployment rate for March was 7.6 percent, down from 7.7 percent in February, and down from 8.2 percent in March 2012.
