The Marion Police Department says they arrested a man for robbing a gas station on the south edge of the city Tuesday evening. The arrest came after a victim followed the suspect until officers could arrive.
On June 25, 2013 at approximately 7:40pm, officers responded to the report of an armed robbery at the Duke/Duchess Shoppe at 1360 Delaware Avenue where a handgun was reportedly used. The suspect fled the store with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police say a citizen who had been threatened with the gun was able to follow the suspect at a safe distance and provide officers with the suspect’s current location. Officers were then able to locate the suspect’s vehicle, make a stop, and the suspect, Garrett Campbell, was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators say evidence of the crime was located in the vehicle, including a realistic looking air gun, and what was believed to be most, if not all, of the stolen money.
“The assistance of the victim was instrumental in bringing this case to a quick and safe conclusion,” stated Lt. Shaffer. “He was able to keep a safe distance and still report the suspect’s location, which led to the arrest of a desperate individual.”
21-year-old Campbell of Marion was arrested for Aggravated Robbery. He was taken to the Multi-County Correctional Center and the case will be forwarded to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for formal charges.
