scienceThe Ohio State University at Marion will host north central Ohio’s first ever science, technology, engineering, and mathematics conference for young people, Expanding Your Horizons Saturday, July 27, 7:45 a.m.-3 p.m. on the Marion Campus, Morrill Hall, 1465 Mount Vernon Avenue, Marion, Ohio.

Sponsored by the United Way of Marion County and the Marion Community Foundation, Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a career oriented conference for young girls & boys ages 10-18 years of age with the goal of making children aware of the various careers related to science technology engineering & mathematics (STEM).  There will also be parent and college student information on the day of the conference.

Presenters will use hands on activities, simulations, technology demonstrations, and various forms of interactive learning directly related to the career field they are interested in pursuing as adults.

The presenters for the July 27 workshops will share their career choices in the STEM fields as scientists, engineers, pilots, nurses, teachers, business technicians, pharmacists, veterinarians, funeral directors, and other professions.

The concept of bringing a STEM conference to north central Ohio began through the efforts of Kenton City Schools mathematics teacher, Amanda Dyer, who traveled to, Normal, IL. over the past few years as a volunteer, teacher, and keynote speaker for EYH Conference at Illinois State University.

According to Dyer, she enjoyed the experience and interaction with other out of state professionals so much, she was inspired to participate and help create an EYH conference in Ohio.  To her surprise, there was only one EYH conference in the state of Ohio.

Traditionally held as a conference for young girls, Dyer went one step further and opened the north central Ohio conference to both boys and girls.

“It will be a great experience for any gender, said Dyer.  “There are many careers and agencies that will be interacting with the students on that day.

The United Way of Marion County, the Marion Community Foundation, The Ohio State University at Marion, and over 60 volunteers contributed to bring the conference to Marion.
