Headlining Fallfest is the alternative rock band Sponge. Sponge has proven to be one of the Motor City’s heaviest hitters after gaining international notoriety with their debut album “Rotting Piñata” (Sony). Emerging from Detroit with hits like “Plowed” and “Molly (16 Candles)” Sponge received massive airplay on radio stations from coast to coast and were in heavy rotation on MTV. Both “Plowed” and “Molly” hit #5 on Billboard’s Modern Rock Charts, catapulting “Rotting Piñata” to Gold, and ultimately Platinum status.
Sponge’s follow up CD, the critically lauded “Wax Ecstatic” (Columbia) scored additional top ten Billboard hits including “Wax Ecstatic” and “Have You Seen Mary?” The band’s music was also featured in popular movies “The Craft,” “Chasing Amy,” “Mall Rats” and “Empire Records.” Sponge’s star continued to rise with network appearances on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and the “Conan O’Brien Show.”
Sponge’s subsequent releases “New Pop Sunday,” “For All The Drugs in The World,” “The Man,” “Galore Galore,” and “Destroy the Boy,” showcased the band’s swirling sonic attack, rooted in 70’s glam and of course, the Motor City influences of The Stooges, The MC5 and Motown-but still sounding distinctly like no one else.
“Plowed” continues to be the band’s signature rock track, having been spotlighted on Guitar Hero’s “Warriors of Rock – 90’s Rock Track Pack” – and on the Paper Jamz Guitar Series 2, in addition to the soundtrack for the Gerard Butler surf movie “Chasing Mavericks.”
Sponge is now touring in support of a brand new release – “Stop the Bleeding.” The full-length disc incorporates the traditional “Sponge sound” in addition to exploring edgier, industrial grooves, most apparent on the band’s twisted cover of “Time in a Bottle.”
Other groups performing at Fallfest include local hip hop artist Alex Sheridan, who is fresh off the heels of his July 2013 album release, “Heartbeats” which climbed to #75 on itunes Hot 100 hip hop charts; regional classic rock cover band favorite Left of Center;
Columbus based rock band Overtheory, who makes a return trip to campus by request after performing at Springfest are on at 1:30 p.m.
At 3:30 p.m., Detroit based rock outfit Rotation, who is pushing the envelope and shaking things up in a stagnant music scene brings a dark, theatrical side to their live performances.
Taking the stage at 5:30 p.m. is Hard Rock/Alternative Rock/Christian band Seven Circle Sunrise (SCS) from Massillon, Ohio. After releasing their debut album “Beauty In Being Alone” produced by Rick Beato (Shinedown/Bullet For My Valentine) late in 2011, Seven Circle Sunrise began touring the country preforming along with Incubus, Slash, Chevelle, Crossfade, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, and many others. Since arriving on the music scene, SCS has more than proven themselves a major force in the independent rock scene.
Known as “America’s Blue Collar Band,” Columbus, Ohio’s XFactor1 performs live from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Formed in 2006 and armed with only a 3 song demo (Generation Chaos) the group started making an immediate name for themselves in the Midwest region of the nation’s corn belt via word of mouth and through a strong showing at live shows with such national heavyweights as Hell Yeah, Godsmack, Stone Sour, Disturbed & more. In 2012, XFactor1 signed to MRi/Megaforce to extend the reach for the release of their most ambitious and rock solid release to date, Famous.Last.Words.
