Teens have the highest crash rate of any group in the United States, and with the school year in full swing many students are driving their cars to school, sports practice and other activities. To help those students make it to their destinations safely, Marion Harding High School has invited AAA to inspect students’ vehicles and discuss safe driving practices on Friday, September 27, 2013 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:40 p.m.
Vehicle Inspections:
Proper vehicle maintenance can help reduce the risk of crashes and roadside breakdowns. In addition, correcting certain detected problems can help improve fuel efficiency.
During high school vehicle inspections, AAA technicians identify potential problems with vehicle belts, hoses, tires, lights, fluid levels and batteries. After each inspection, technicians discuss any detected problems with the student.
Distracted Driving:
Studies have shown that distracted driving contributes to 16 percent of all fatal crashes, and teens are distracted 25 percent of the time behind the wheel. Therefore, AAA encourages vehicle maintenance inspection participants to take the Text-Free Driver Pledge. Those who take the pledge receive a reminder band and guide to Ohio’s new texting while driving law.
Ohio’s law prohibits minors from using any handheld electronic communications device behind the wheel. Officers started issuing citations for violators of this law on March 1, 2013.
Teen Driver Safety Resources:
Those who participate in the vehicle maintenance inspections also receive teen driver safety collateral to display in their vehicle. This includes a link to the Keys2Drive website, which offers evidence-based tools to guide families through the learning-to-drive process.
Marion Harding High School is located at 1500 Harding Hwy E., Marion, Ohio. This event is part of a series of inspections taking place at schools throughout AAA Ohio Auto Club’s territory.
