League of Women Voters (LWV) of Marion will hold their annual Candidates’ Night Debate on Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at Tri-Rivers Career Center in the multi-purpose room. The evening provides voters the opportunity to ask questions to those candidates for contested offices
Community residents are strongly encouraged to attend and should arrive for seating between 7:00 and 7:20 p.m. The debate will begin promptly at 7:30.
Candidates will answer questions and participate in a debate-type forum broadcast live by WMRN, with station manager Scott Shawver serving as moderator. LWV Co-Presidents Beth Babich and R.J. Bicking will introduce the Candidates Night program.
For audience guests who wish to submit a question to one of the candidates, League members will furnish index cards onto which the questions, one per card, may be written. League members will collect and sort the questions and submit as many of them to the moderator as is possible for the time allowed. WMRN radio listeners may also submit questions by calling 740-389-4681. League will monitor the timed responses and rebuttals.
Candidates Night will be videotaped by Harding High School’s Telecommunications Department under the guidance of telecom teacher John Mullins. Time Warner Cable will air the video on Channel 18 the weekend before the Tuesday, November 5 Election Day.
Contested candidates for Marion City Council-at-Large (three to be elected) include: Scott Crider, Democrat; Josh M. Daniels, Democrat; Rebbeca Gustin: Democrat; and Sulu Kelley III, Libertarian.
Candidates for Marion City Council – 2nd Ward (one to be elected) are: David Osmun, Write-In Candidate and Ayers Ratliff, Write-In Candidate.
Marion Township Trustee Candidates (two to be elected) include: Lynnie Birdsong, Lynn M. Clabaugh, Glenn Coble, and Karen S. McCLeary.
Although they do not participate in the LWVM Candidates Night, the following is a list of School Board Candidates: Elgin, three to be elected: Jennifer M. Buchanan, Jennifer L. Knapp Conroy, Kay Jean Lauer Furlong and Carson Wasserbeck; Marion City, two to be elected: Gary Iams, Mike McCreary, and Mark Parker; Marion City (Unexpired Term), one to be elected: Ted McKinniss; Pleasant, two to be elected: Gary K. Sims and Ed Vaflor; Ridgedale, three to be elected: Angela Burns, Jim Johnson, and Andy RIcketts; River Valley, three to be elected: Claudia Fetter, Nancy Richards, and No Candidate Filed.
On Tuesday, November 5 Election Day, the polls will be open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. To be able to vote, voters must remember to bring a document that verifies their identity and current address. Identification may include a current and valid photo identification (auto license, etc.), a military identification that shows the voter’s name and current address, or a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, government check, paycheck, or other government document, other than this reminder, or a voter registration notification that shows the voter’s name and current address.
To vote for a write-in candidate on the electronic ballot, you must select the empty oval that says “Write-In Candidate.” When a keyboard appears on the screen, type in the write-in candidate’s name. A voter may ask to see a list of candidates for the write-in position when the voter signs in to vote. This list will not be shown unless the voter asks.
