Did you know that in 2012 6.5% of 8th graders, 17% of sophomores, and 22.9% of seniors has used marijuana in the past month? Did you know that 17% of teens said they had used a prescription drug that was not theirs and 10% used a pain reliever such as Vicodin or Oxycontin that was not theirs? However, did you also know that, according to Marion-Crawford ADAMH, a national survey shows that teens who believe their parents would strongly disapprove of them using substances are less likely than their peers to try them?
This Thursday, November 14, 2013, from 7:00pm to 8:30pm, a Parenting for Prevention workshop is being held by the Marion-Crawford Prevention Programs and Marion County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with Marion County STAND (formerly Opiate Task Force).
Presenters will include area experts on drugs that are abused and youth prevention. Those attending will hear about the latest trends in teen drug use, learn what they can do to prevent substance abuse among children, and find out about how technology plays a role in teen drug use.
The workshop will be held at the First Church of the Nazarene, 233 West Church Street (enter through the gym doors).
Snacks and babysitting will be provided free of charge; and all who attend will be entered to win a $50 Wal-Mart Gift Card.
If you are the parent, or even grandparent, of a child 10 or older, organizers say this is a good place to arm yourself with the right information.
