Marion Technical College students with aspirations of pursuing a bachelor’s degree now will be able to continue their academic pursuits near home through Ohio University, after the two schools sign a partnership agreement earlier this month on the Marion campus.
As a result of the new partnership, Marion Technical College students will be afforded the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree by completing part – up to three years – of their higher education on MTC’s campus and the remainder of academic courses at Ohio University. The partnership includes an option of earning a degree through distance learning, so students may remain in Marion while completing the entire bachelor’s degree.
“Marion Technical College realizes that our students come to MTC because they want to stay close to home. Having several avenues at Ohio University for students to earn a four-year degree while staying in Marion is a wonderful opportunity,” said Vicky Wood, Dean of Business and Information Technologies. “We are thrilled with this transfer agreement.”
The collaboration between MTC and Ohio University will offer individuals who have earned an associate degree in a technical field from MTC an opportunity to complete a bachelor’s degree from Ohio University without leaving the region. Following completion of articulation agreements between the institutions, four degree programs are expected to be offered initially as part of the agreement.
MTC students will have the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Technical and Applied Studies degree by maximizing transfer of credits earned from any of the College’s Associate of Applied Science or Applied Business degree programs. In addition, Ohio University’s Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree will provide a convenient and affordable advancement path for those students who have completed an associate degree in a criminal justice area.
Students who have completed an associate degree in nursing and earned their RN licensure can complete a bachelor’s in nursing through the RN-to-BSN program, which is accredited by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
The Bachelor of Science in Applied Management provides a business focused option for students. A Bachelor of Customer Service Management will be added in fall 2014 and additional programs are expected to follow within the next year.
“We are pleased to be able to offer students whose work and family circumstances prevent them from attending classes at Ohio University’s campuses the opportunity to experience the academic excellence that is a hallmark of our bachelor’s degree programs,” said Ohio University Vice Provost for eLearning and Strategic Partnerships, Deb Gearhart.
“This partnership provides MTC students an affordable, convenient way to earn a bachelor degree by taking three years of courses at MTC and one year of online courses at OU” said Wood. Students in the programs will pay the MTC tuition of $166 per credit hour for courses taken at MTC and $240 per credit hour for courses taken online from Ohio University (by Ohio residents). The partnership also streamlines transfer of credits, student services and financial aid activities for students in the program, facilitating the ability to move easily between the two institutions’ systems.
