The American Red Cross is strengthening efforts to assist with flood recovery in several communities in Marion County by canvassing the area with a large group of volunteers this weekend.
As many as fifty Red Cross volunteers from around Ohio will meet in front of the LaRue United Methodist Church at 166 North High Street on Saturday, January 11, 2014 to begin the process. Following a 9 a.m. briefing, teams will head out to the areas affected by the December floods, including LaRue, Prospect and Green Camp, to provide recovery information and support for residents who are in need of Red Cross services.
“We want to make sure that the residents whose homes and property were damaged by the floods know that the American Red Cross is here for them,” said Matt Bertram, CEO, American Red Cross Central-Southeast Ohio. “We’re committed to helping the people of Marion County who experienced some of the worst flooding they’ve seen in years. Our objective is to do whatever we can to assist them and their neighborhoods to get back on their feet and move forward in a positive way.”
Part of the teams’ work will include opening cases to document the damage done and assistance needed for those impacted. Based on assessments done by Red Cross volunteers as well as input from our partner organizations, as many as 70 families may need help of some kind to repair their property now that the high water has receded.
The Red Cross is being supported in these efforts by local Boy Scout Troops who will be providing hot drinks for the volunteers, as well as several local elected officials and community leaders. Keith Parrill, EMA and Partnerships Manager for the American Red Cross Central-Southeast Ohio Region is serving as long term recovery manager for this incident.
