Marion City Schools Assistant Superintendent Steve Anway announced Friday that he has accepted a position with Old Fort Local Schools.
The Old Fort Board of Education voted Thursday, February 20, 2014 to hire Anway, who will start in the new position by March 17. He will also serve as superintendent of Bettsville Local Schools, which is in discussions with the state about transferring the district’s territory to Old Fort.
Anway said Friday in a media release that he is excited about the opportunity. His first job as a principal had been in the Bettsville district in 2002-03.
“It’s a solid academic district. There’s a lot of pride in the district. I just know a lot of people there,” he said. “It’s just a great opportunity for me.”
Anway said his decision to accept the position is no reflection on Marion City Schools.
“I do feel like we are headed in a good direction,” he said as he discussed positive changes that’s happened under Superintendent Gary Barber’s leadership.
“I think about all the changes, and it’s amazing all the things that’s happened,” Anway said. “I’m proud to be a part of that.”
He thanked Barber and Jennifer Lawson, the district’s director of continuous improvement, for sharing their knowledge with him about issues regarding curriculum.
“I’ve grown a lot in the last six months,” he said.
Anway, along with his duties as assistant superintendent, served as interim superintendent during the transition between Marion City Schools superintendents Jim Barney and Barber in 2013.
“I think Steve has been an important part of my transition to the district,” Barber said on Friday. “He created a lot of stability during the transition. He really enabled a lot of us to come in and hit the ground running.”
There will be no immediate action to fill Anway’s position. Barber said the district has “some very capable people in place” who will discuss how to share the responsibilities throughout the remainder of the school year. Discussions about the position will take place in the spring or summer.
