Historical Society Holding Annual Rummage Sale

The Marion County Historical Society is having a Museum and Membership Rummage sale on Saturday April 26, 2014, from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The sale will be held in the auditorium at Heritage Hall and also in the parking lot behind the museum, weather permitting.

A Members Only Presale will be held on Friday April 25 from 4-6 pm.  You should bring your Membership ID for admittance to the presale.

Proceeds from this event will be used to purchase collections preservation supplies and to support the MCHS operating budget. The mission of the Marion County Historical Society is to document the history of Marion County, Ohio by identifying, collecting, and preserving artifacts, records and personal papers of value from Marion County residents, organizations, businesses, and related groups from the prehistoric times to the present. Items included in this sale are donated specifically to be sold for the benefit of MCHS.

Anyone wishing to donate good used items to MCHS for the sale may bring them to Heritage Hall between 9 AM and 4 PM from April 22 to April 24. Please call 740-387-4255 prior to bringing your items so we can have someone available to help unload your vehicle.

While we are accepting donations of a wide variety of items, we prefer that no clothing be donated. For those unfamiliar with Heritage Hall, it is located on the corner of Church and State Streets with the parking lot on the south side of the building.

Children Services Hosting Annual Pinwheel Play Day

Many free activities, including games and inflatables, as well as an Easter Egg Hunt with a Disney trip grand prize will highlight the annual Pinwheel Play Day at Marion County Children Services this Saturday, April 26, 2014.

 

The day, which runs from 11:00am to 3:00pm, offers families free activities while highlighting the work of Children Services and other local non-profits. The pinwheel name comes from the hundreds of pinwheels plants in the agencies yard, one for each investigation completed. There are 776 pinwheels this year, representing the number of investigations in 2013.

 

The Easter egg hunt kicks off the day at 11:00am and the grand prize winner will receive a family trip for four to Walt Disney World.

 

The games, inflatables, and crafts will be available until 3:00pm. A concession stand will also be available. New attractions this year include a petting zoo sponsored by the Ridgedale FFA. Pony rides also will be available.

“A Grand Night for Singing!” to Feature Professional Opera Soloists

Marion Lecture Recital Music Club (MLRMC) is giving the gift of “A Grand Night for Singing” to club members and to the public on Sunday, April 27, 2014. Robert Nims, retired music professor who is a member of the adjunct voice faculty at Delaware’s Ohio Wesleyan University, organized the appearance of three professional opera soloists to sing for a program of audience-pleasing Favorite Arias from Favorite Operas.

 

The concert will be held at 4:00 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 421 Mt. Vernon Avenue in Marion. Admission is free but donations to help defray expenses will be gratefully accepted.

 

MLRMC is extending a special invitation to the private vocal music teachers and to the area high school vocal music faculties and students to attend this “entertaining and educational music experience.”

 

Soprano Chelsea Hart, native of Coldwater, Michigan, received her Master of Music degree at the Ohio State University, and will pursue a Performance Diploma this fall at Indiana University.  Previous roles she has sung include Mimi (La Boheme), Micaela (Carmen), Zerlina (Don Giovanni), Female Chorus (Rape of Lucretia), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi) and Papagena (Die Zauberflote).  Among numerous competitions, Hart won the Margaret Speaks Award, Women In Music, Wilson Award and the OSU and the Central Michigan University Concerto Competition Awards.  Upcoming performances will include Verdi’s Requiem, as soprano soloist, and the role of Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro.

 

Mezzo-soprano Katherine Osborne, from New Orleans, has performed operatic roles dating from the Baroque era to the 20th century, including Despina in Cosi fan tutte, Amor in L’incoronazione di Poppea, the title role in Iolanthe and other operas by composers that include Haydn and Donizetti.  Her performance in Donizetti’s L’ajo nell’imbarazzo was hailed by The Washington Post as “outstanding…[she] projected a fiery personality and sang graceful coloratura.”  Osborne’s has been awarded prizes by the Opera Guild of Northern Virginia, Paul Robeson Vocal Competition, National Association of Teachers of Singing, Bel Canto Foundation, and Overture to the Cultural Season.

 

Tenor Paul Melcher, who grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, received his Master of Music from Central Michigan University in Piano and Voice Performance. He has performed all over the United States, in Britain and in Norway, and has played in prestigious halls such as Carnegie, Severance, Heinz, and Devos Halls.  Melcher’s awards include first prize for the Schubert Club Competition of Minnesota, and he was the 2007 and 2009 concerto competition winner both at St. Olaf College and Central Michigan University.  His playing was featured in “A Christmas in Norway” that was aired on PBS from 2005 through Christmas 2013.

 

Melcher’s experience in opera includes roles as: Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Rodolfo in La Boheme, and Rinucchio in Gianni Schicchi.  Last year, he served as the Director of Music for the Cabaret Series of Opera Columbus and was the pianist for their “Opera on the Edge” production of La Boheme.

 

Piano accompanist Robert Nims retired in 2002 from Ohio Wesleyan University where he was Professor of Voice and Director of Choral Activities.  Nims trained as both an organist and singer and holds graduate degrees from the Yale School of Music and Boston University.  He also studied organ with Nadia Boulanger in France.  He has appeared frequently as baritone soloist with orchestras and opera companies around the state.  Since his retirement he has served as an interim voice teacher at The Ohio State University, Capital University and the Cleveland Institute of Music.
