Troopers from the Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol are investigating a fatal crash that occurred on April 16, 2014. An Ottawa woman was killed in the crash that occurred at about 1:30 pm on State Route 309 in Montgomery Township in Marion County.
A 2002 Pontiac Grand Am driven by Hope Okuly, 44 of Ottawa, Ohio was eastbound on State Route 309 just east of the Marion and Hardin County Line, according to the Patrol. A 1999 Freightliner W900L driven by Rodney J. Whitaker, 49 of Kenton, Ohio was westbound on State Route 309.
Preliminary investigation indicates the Pontiac drove left of center side swiping the Freightliner. The Pontiac overturned coming to rest on the driver’s side.
Okuly was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Dr. Marc Comianos. Whitaker was not injured.
Investigators said Okuly and Whitaker were not wearing their seatbelts.
The State Highway Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, Scioto Valley Fire Department, Marseilles Fire Department, Med Care and BKP EMS, ODOT and Marion County EMA.
The crash remains under investigation.
