This Friday, May 9, will kick off the third year for the Downtown Marion Market. Each week, from 4 – 7 p.m., vendors will once again be displaying their wares on the sidewalks of West Center Street in the heart of Downtown Marion.
Karen Herr, Manager of Downtown Marion and market organizer said that one of the best things about the Market is that it changes a little each week.
“This early in the season,” said Herr, “there may be some early vegetables, but many of the vendors will feature flowers … hanging baskets, geranium planters, etc. … as well as bedding plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers … especially with Mother’s Day this Sunday.
“Later in the season,” said Herr, “the fruits and vegetables take center stage and we’ll move on to summer plants and fall mums.”
Herr said throughout the entire season attendees will find baked goods, breads, maple syrup, honey, jams, jellies, pies, donuts, art, soaps, scent tarts, quiche, kale chips, jewelry, blankets and more.
The market is located on the sidewalks of West Center Street between Main and Prospect streets, and anything homemade, homegrown, handmade or remade is welcome.
“We’re a little broad in that definition,” said Herr, “in that you’ll find Amish-made items for resale or possibly fruits and vegetables from a neighboring Central Ohio county. What we don’t want to see are mass produced items.”
Herr also indicated that the Downtown Marion Market has again been awarded a grant from the Marion County Council on Aging. These grant monies will be used to provide low-income seniors vouchers for food items purchased at the Market. Seniors with incomes $15,000 or less for single or $25,000 or less for couples should apply at the Downtown Marion table on the corner of Main & Center Streets after 4:00 p.m. each week.
“We are certainly excited to again receive this chance,” said Herr, “to provide Marion’s seniors with the opportunity to receive free fresh fruits and vegetables.”

“You can sign up for a night, a month, or the entire 21 weeks,” said Herr. “It’s a great way for small enterprises to make money.”
