Marion Unemployment Rate Lowest in Nearly 7 Years

The unemployment rate for Marion County was 5.3 percent in May 2014, down from 5.4 percent in April, according to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. That rate is the lowest it has been since October 2007 when the rate was 5.2 percent. The rate is also over 2 percent lower than a year ago.

While the low rate is good news it does come with far fewer people employed. In October 2007 there was an available workforce of 32,600 and 30,900 people employed. In May, the available workforce was down by over 4,000 people to 28,000 with 26,500 people employed.

The unemployment rate for Marion County is the second highest in the area, with only Crawford County higher. Delaware and Union Counties have almost unbelievably low rates of sub-4.0 percent.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.5 percent in May 2014, down from 5.7 percent in April 2014. Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 2,900 over the month, from a revised 5,295,400 in April to 5,298,300 in May.

The U.S. unemployment rate for May was 6.3 percent, unchanged from April, and down from 7.5 percent in May 2013.
