Police Made Quick Arrest in Fire that Destroyed Three Homes

Marion Police DepartmentThe Marion Police Department reported they arrested a man on Tuesday for setting the fire that destroyed three homes on West Columbia Avenue earlier that morning. Police say the fire was started in retaliation following a fight.

On June 18, 2014, detectives from the Marion Police Department and investigators from the Marion City Fire Department followed up on the suspicious fire at 460 West Columbia Avenue. During the investigation, they identified Martin Kiefer, 48, of 177 Olney Avenue in Marion, as a suspect.

Investigators said that Kiefer allegedly had an altercation fight with two juveniles who live at one of the houses on West Columbia Avenue, made various threats, then started the fire by throwing a “Molotov cocktail.”

“We are grateful for the citizens who helped us make an arrest in this case, particularly because to potential for serious injury and death was so great in this instance,” said Lt. Chris Adkins of the Marion Police Department.

Kiefer was arrested on three counts of Aggravated Arson and transported to the Multi-County Correctional Center to await formal charges.
