The Marion Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office are both warning residents and business about two scams that have been brought to their attention.
The Marion Police Department said they are investigating a possible fraud targeting the fire victims from the arson that destroyed three homes on West Columbia Street earlier this week. Police said that an unknown, white female was allegedly going to residences and businesses soliciting monies on behalf of the Price Family, one of those affected by the fire. The Price family reported that they are not soliciting money and did not want our citizens and businesses giving money to this possible con artist.
Investigators are asking anyone with information on this case to contact them at 740-387-2525 or the TIPS Line at 740-375-TIPS.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to local businesses about a scam on the internet that is circulating and appears to be targeting businesses. They said that it is unknown what address the email is coming from but when you open the email it simply states; “Please kindly review the document I just uploaded for you on Google secured drive.”
“There is also a pdf link attached and when you click on this link I am told it pulls all the contacts and any financial information you have on your computer,” stated Major Aaron Corwin. “After doing so a mass email goes out to all your contacts with your information asking for donations for various reasons.”
Corwin said that if a business or an individual receives this email they should simply delete it and not open the attachment.
