Columbia Gas Reports Scam Targeting Their Customers

Columbia Gas of Ohio has reported that customers should beware of a phone scam that has surfaced in several areas in Ohio over the past few days. The scam is apparently targeted at both residential customers as well as small businesses.

A caller claiming to be from Columbia Gas informs the customer that they owe money from their past bill and must pay immediately or face termination of service. Customers are then instructed to make the transaction by purchasing a money pack card, and then calling a toll free number to complete the transaction.

Columbia Gas said they never ask for pre-paid debit cards for payment and that they provide at least two business days for customers to make a payment before service is terminated.

Customers having questions about their account should call 1-800-344-4077. Customers believing they have been a victim of payment fraud are encouraged to contact their local authorities as well.

To help avoid being the victim of a scam, remember:

  • Never give personal information, including Social Security numbers and banking information, to unconfirmed sources. Columbia Gas only asks for a Social Security number when a customer is applying for new service.
  • If you are unsure about the legitimacy of any programs or offers claiming to be affiliated with Columbia Gas, ask one of Columbia Gas’ customer service representatives.
  • If you believe you have been the victim of a scam, contact your local law enforcement authorities, as well as your local banking institution and/or Credit Card Company.
