The unemployment rate for Marion County was 5.2 percent in September 2014, down from 5.4 percent in August. The rate is the lowest since October 2007, but comes with far fewer people in the available workforce and reporting as employed.
In September 2014, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services reported an available workforce in Marion County of 28,400 with 26,900 employed. 1,500 were listed as actively looking for work.
Those numbers are far fewer than in October 2007 when there was an available workforce of 32,600, 30,900 employed, and 1,700 looking for work.
In fact, the September 2014 rate decrease comes directly from 100 fewer people in the available workforce and not from more people reporting as employed.
The rate is significantly lower than a year ago when it stood at 7.8 percent and comes with 300 more people reporting as employed.
All counties surround Marion also saw decreases in their unemployment rates except for Morrow County which stayed flat. Delaware and Union Counties dipped below 4.0 percent.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.6 percent in September 2014, down from 5.7 percent in August 2014. Ohio’s nonfarm wage and salary employment increased 6,000 over the month, from a revised 5,297,400 in August to 5,303,400 in September.
The U.S. unemployment rate for September was 5.9 percent, down from 6.1 percent in August, and down from 7.2 percent in September 2013.
