Cold Temps Force Delay to Hydrant Flushing

Aqua OhioAqua Ohio’s Marion Division announced Monday that hydrant flushing in the Village of Prospect scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday has been postponed. The work has been rescheduled for Monday and Tuesday of next week (November 24 and 25) between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.

“Flushing is an important part of Aqua’s maintenance program but with the extreme cold predicted, we thought it made sense to delay the process that involves opening fire hydrants rather than cause severe icing on streets and sidewalks,” said Don Scott, Operations Supervisor for the Marion District.

Current predictive weather models indicate temperatures remaining well below freezing for the next several days. Flushing hydrants at these temperatures could cause unsafe icy conditions for vehicular traffic and pedestrians. With warmer weather conditions predicted next week, Aqua plans to resume the flushing process at that time.

Scott said that once flushing resumes no interruptions in water service will occur but customers may notice a drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration. If possible, customers should refrain from doing laundry to avoid possible staining while the flushing is taking place near their home. If tap water is discolored, allow it to run until clear. Running several cold-water faucets at the same time will help the water clear faster.
