This Sunday, December 14, 2014, the public is invited to sing their favorite Christmas songs played on the Marion Palace Theatre’s Mighty Wurlitzer. The sing-a-long begins at 3:00pm.
The program will last just over an hour and feature local organists Thomas Buffer and Angela Carbetta, along with Columbus theatre organist Shawn Kenney.
“The Mighty Wurlitzer is a terribly misunderstood rarity,” said Carbetta. “Marion is incredibly fortunate to have a functioning theatre organ in a gorgeous, historic theatre.”
The organ has a drums, cymbals, castanets, chimes, and a xylophone. Attendees will get to hear Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bells and Santa Claus is Coming to Town with bells and a train whistle. And it really does have bells and whistles, even soft bells for Silent Night and chimes on O Come, All Ye Faithful.
“My fear is that folks will figure they’ll just listen to Christmas organ music like at church. Not the case,” said Carbetta. “The Mighty Wurlitzer is an entirely different animal. It ain’t no church organ!”
Donations will be accepted for organ maintenance and repair.
Tickets are not required for the free show, but seating is first come, first served.
