Longtime president of Marion Technical College, Dr. J. Richard Bryson, has announced his retirement. Bryson came to the College in July 1972 to serve as Vice President for Administration before he was named as the President of Marion Technical College in December of 1973.
“To see someone exhibit dedication and passion for an institution for 42 years is exceedingly rare, but Dr. Bryson has certainly demonstrated this with his time at Marion Technical College. He has truly carried out the mission of the College by offering an enriched and personal educational experience for our community with programs that lead to jobs. He will leave a legacy that will never be forgotten, and upon which we can build for the future,” said current MTC Board Chair, Rex Parrott, about Bryson’s retirement.
Prior to his tenure at MTC, Dr. Bryson served as a mathematics instructor in junior and senior high schools in Pennsylvania and as an administrator and instructor at Bowling Green State University (BGSU). At BGSU, his primary responsibilities were management assignments in general University administration, continuing education, student teaching, special University events, space allocation, and facilities planning.
Dr. Bryson earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Slippery Rock College where he majored in Mathematics and History and minored in English; a Masters of Education with a major in Mathematics from Indiana University (PA); and a Doctor of Philosophy from Bowling Green State University with a major in higher education administration and a minor in Mathematics. He also has attended Pennsylvania State University, University of Pittsburgh, Baldwin-Wallace College, Kent State University, University of Toledo, and Harvard University.
Dr. Bryson has been active in community affairs, having served as a member on the board of directors of the Marion Area Chamber of Commerce, Marion Convention and Tourism Bureau, Marion County Historical Society, Harding Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Community MedCenter Hospital, Wyandot Popcorn Museum Foundation, Ohio Community College Association, and numerous other regional, state, and local professional, governmental, and community boards and committees.
