New business filings increased in 2014 for the fifth year in a row, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted announced Thursday.
The office reported 93,775 business entities were formed in 2014 compared to 89,735 in 2013, according to the office. New business filings totaled 88,068 in 2012; 82,601 in 2011 and 80,273 in 2010.
“Ohio continues to be a place where companies want to be located because we are focused on providing quality customer service that understands the needs of business,” Husted said in a statement. “By working to roll out the red carpet and cut the red tape we are helping improve the state’s business climate, and that means a stronger economy and more jobs.”
The total includes for-profit and non-profit corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships. Filing with the office is one of the first steps businesses take to forming and does not guarantee the business will actually begin operations, create jobs or turn a profit.
Husted’s office attributed some of the growth to businesses being able to file more forms online. Half of all new companies in Ohio are now started online, according to the office.
