Marion Community Foundation looks to award over $300k in scholarships

Applications are now being accepted for the 2015 Marion Community Foundation Scholarship Program. The annual scholarship program for high school seniors and graduates will award more than $300,000 in Marion and surrounding areas.

“Each scholarship has different eligibility requirements and selection criteria, as determined by the wishes of the donor who created the fund,” said Julie Prettyman, Program Manager. “Donors may create scholarships to benefit students from a particular high school or who intend to enroll at a particular college or university or pursue a specific field of study.”

The Wopat Scholars awards continue in the 2015 Scholarship Program. The Wopat Scholars awards provide $10,000 per year scholarships, renewable for four years, to outstanding local students.  In total last year, all of the scholarship funds at Marion Community Foundation generated 116 awards to local students, totaling $322,000.

Due to its continued success, the application for the scholarship program is available online.  According to Prettyman, only online applications are accepted. Students will be considered for all available scholarships by completing one online application by the deadline of March 12 at 5 p.m.

“The online application is easy to use,” said Prettyman. “While it requires detailed information, such as a copy of the student’s FAFSA, recommendations, a personal statement, and transcripts, the online application has a save and continue feature that enables students to complete it in parts, obtained necessary supporting materials, and come back to finish.”

The application program will ask applicants a number of general questions, as well as some very specific ones which will determine whether they match the criteria for a number of scholarship awards.  At the end of the application process, the online program will provide the applicant with a list of the scholarships for which he or she qualified.  If these scholarships require additional information for the application, such as an essay, the student will be prompted for the additional information. Once the application is complete and submitted, an email will be sent to the applicant to verify the application is being processed.

Additional information and access to the online scholarship application is available at marioncommunityfoundation.org.  Students should click on the “Scholarships” tab in the left sidebar to start the process.  Applications are available now through 5 p.m. March 12.
