Marion City Schools’ bus involved in minor crash

The Marion Police Department said a school bus from the Marion City Schools was involved in a minor crash Tuesday morning with one student transported to the hospital.

At approximately 7:45am on March 3, 2015, police responded to a reported crash involving the school bus on North Greenwood Street just south of East Fairground Street. While in route to the call, police said it was learned that there may have been some injuries on the bus and the Marion City Fire Department was also dispatched to the scene.

Officials said that investigation revealed that an 80-year-old male was backing a 2007 Honda Fit from his driveway at 621 N. Greenwood Street and struck the rear of the Marion City School bus. There was moderate damage to the Honda Fit and very minor damage to the bus.

The driver of the Honda was cited at the scene for Improper Backing.

One student was transported by squad as a precautionary measure, according to police, with no visible injury but complaining of pain. There were 35 students on the bus at the time of the accident and no other injuries were noted. The driver of the Honda Fit was not injured.

Police said that Marion City School officials and the Grant School Resource Officer were on the scene of the accident very quickly.

“The cause of this accident was not weather related, even though freezing rain was falling at the time,” said Marion Police Chief Bill Collins in a media release. “It can be attributed to driver inattention.”
