State reports that new concealed-carry licenses down, renewals up in 2014

The number of concealed-carry handgun licenses issued in Ohio dropped in 2014 after several years of increases, according to a report released Thursday by the state attorney general.

County sheriffs issued about 40 percent fewer new concealed-carry gun permits in 2014 than in 2013, but renewed about 8 percent more licenses than the previous year. Concealed-carry permits expire after five years.

In 2014, counties issued 110,212 regular licenses (58,066 new licenses and 52,146 renewal licenses) and 57 temporary licenses. In 2013, counties issued 145,342 licenses — 96,972 new licenses and 48,370 renewal licenses — nearly double the number issued in 2012.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reported 427 issued; 219 renewed; 12 suspended; 2 revoked and 5 denied. It should be noted this does not reflect all of the license activity for Marion County residents as you can apply for and renew licenses anywhere in the state.

Attorney General Mike DeWine attributed the large number of license renewals to a significant number of licenses being issued five years ago. County sheriffs report the data quarterly to DeWine’s office, which is required by law to issue an annual report to state lawmakers.

Ohioans over age 21 can apply for a concealed-carry permit after completing a 12-hour training course. The license application fee is $67 for Ohioans who have been residents for more than five years and $91 for those with fewer than five years residency.

A new state law drops the requirement to 8 hours of training in late March and allows nonresidents who work in Ohio to obtain permits.
