Free documentary showing and discussion to highlight issues surround drug addiction

The House I Live InThe Crawford-Marion ADAMH Board in partnership with Marion Correctional Institution, Marion County Family Court, Marion County Court of Common Pleas and Marion Municipal Court are presenting The House I Live In documentary at the Marion Palace Theatre on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 5:30 pm.

The program is free and open to the public but donations will be accepted for the incentive program at the three drug courts in Marion County.

The war on drugs was declared by President Nixon in June of 1971.  In the 44 years since, incarceration of those convicted of nonviolent drug offenses has skyrocketed along with the cost of incarceration and enforcement. In 1980, there were 50,000 non-violent offenders incarcerated across the country. That number soared to over 500,000 by the year 2000.

The Marion Palace Theatre will serve as one of several sites for viewing the House I Live In documentary. This distinctive endeavor also involves: the Ohio Reformatory for Women, Loraine, Dayton, Mansfield and Marion Correctional Institutions as well as Ohio University.

The movie was selected as a winner in the Sundance Film Festival. Thie film tracks the evolution of the war on drugs and its impact on the poor and minority community. It also points out the seriousness of drug abuse as a public health crisis and the shortcomings of available treatment for addiction.

The audience will see the documentary and then have the opportunity to ask questions via Skype to those incarcerated in several Ohio prisons for non violent drug offenses – including Marion Correctional Institution and the Ohio Reformatory for Women.

Doors open at 5 pm with the program starting at 5:30. Donations will be collected at the door and will go to the Incentive programs at the three local drug court programs.
