The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public and area businesses about a potential telephone scam. An unknown suspect is contacting area businesses and claiming that they are from the “Marion Department of Water.”
The caller informs the business that their water bill has not been paid and their water service will immediately be shut off if they don’t make a payment. The caller then gives instructions of requiring a money order sent to them to make the payment to avoid having their water shut off.
If anyone receives a call similar to this, do not pay any money without first contacting your actual water company and inquiring on any payment owed. If you are a victim of this scam and paid money then you should call the appropriate law enforcement agency.
