Marion Senior Center celebrates 50 years of service

50 year celebrationA multitude of past and present Marion Senior Center members gathered at the Center on Monday, July 13, 2015 to celebrate the organization’s 50th Anniversary.

The Center’s first organizational meeting was held on October 21, 1965 in the Recreation Room of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, at which there were 14 seniors in attendance. In 1980 the Center moved to its current location in Kennedy Park and membership has grown to over 800 members.

Many local and district officials were on hand to celebrate the special occasion, as well as former Center directors Bede Agner and Sue Wisebaker along with current director Steve Badertscher. Mayor Scott Schertzer officially proclaimed the day as “Marion Senior Center Day” in the City of Marion. Marion County Commissioners Dan Russell, Ken Stiverson and Andy Appelfeller and Area Agency on Aging – District 5 representatives Joyce Boling and John Peterson also presented proclamations honoring the Center for fifty years of service to older adults.

Marion Senior CenterPianist Terri Malone provided dinner music for the 140 guests in attendance as they enjoyed a Pork Chop BBQ dinner, served with baked beans, coleslaw, dinner roll, and cake as part of the festivities. After a formal program, highlighted by former directors Agner and Wisebaker reminiscing and sharing fond memories from decades past, attendees were treated to a special musical performance by Ann Schertzer and her daughters Olivia and Sidney.

The Marion Senior Center provides high-quality, diverse and dynamic programs, activities and services for Marion area seniors age 50 and over. The Center is located at 2375 Harding Highway East in Marion.
