St. Mary’s Catholic Church, which has been located on North Main Street in Marion for 117 years, will hold a parish festival on August 23. Admission is free and open to the public.
The 2015 Festival will include a 2-day flea market, chicken BBQ, children’s games and activities, prize drawings, live entertainment, and festival foods. The main event is Sunday, August 23 from 1-9 p.m. on the church grounds at 251 N. Main St.
The chicken BBQ meal will be served for both lunch and dinner and includes eat-in and drive-thru service. The meal — prepared by locally famous chef Mike Nicolosi — is $8 and includes a ½ chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, roll and butter. Dine-in will take place in the air-conditioned comfort of Moira Hall, the fellowship hall in the basement of the church. Drive-thru service will be available in the church’s south parking lot and will be available Noon-5 p.m. Advanced tickets are available in the church office.
Festival activities begin at 1 p.m. Kids’ inflatables, games, entertainment, and festival foods – sno-cones, tamales, popcorn, funnel cakes, cotton candy, lemon shake-ups and more — will be located in the church’s north parking lot. Included will be the ever-popular cake wheel with home-baked goods provided by the ladies of the parish. An all-day ride and game pass for the kids will be available for $10.
Live entertainment will be offered free throughout the day, beginning at 1 p.m. Performers include dancers from Douce Dance Studios (1-2 p.m.), the Harding High School band (2-3 p.m.), Bethlehem Dance (3-4 p.m.), the Primrose Bell Ringers (4-5 p.m.), and Tomasz Lisiecki & Sons (5-6 p.m.). Evening entertainment is the Fog Band (6-9 p.m.) and includes local talent Steve Mull, Randy Boldman, Joe Alexander, and Dick Thorpe.
Due to the generous amount of donations from St. Mary’s parishioners, the flea market has grown so large that it will be offered two days. Saturday hours are 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and Sunday hours are 1-8 p.m. The event will be held in the gymnasium of St. Mary School. Every sort of household item, children’s items and games, bicycles, small appliances and items too numerous to mention will be for sale at bargain prices.
Sponsors for the 2015 Festival include Marion Insurance Agency, Gunder, Hall & Folk – A Snyder Family Funeral Home, Carl Graphics, and Douce Dance Studios. Raffle gift contributors include Rejuvenations salon and Hemmerly’s florist.
