Ohio announces nearly 40 percent reduction in length of student testing

The Ohio Department of Education just released the length of time each state test should take this school year, showing math and English testing times cut by about 40 percent for almost every grade.

The length of social studies and science tests will not change from last year.

Math exams will be limited to 2 1/2 hours for the year, for all grades except high school, where they will take three hours. That’s a reduction for every grade.

English exams will be three hours through the fifth grade, then increase to 3 1/2 hours from sixth grade on.

The exception is third grade, where students will have an increase. They’ll take three-hour English tests in both the fall and spring because of Ohio’s Third Grade Reading Guarantee, up from 2 1/2 hours in both the fall and spring.

The guarantee requires students to reach a certain score on English tests in third grade to advance to fourth grade. Two tests gives students two chances to pass, with the fall test meant to help teachers identify kids that need extra help.

Sixth- and eighth-graders will have the most total testing time of any grades, at nine hours total.
