Gov. John Kasich scored his highest job approval rating as governor in a new poll with 62 percent of Ohioans approving of his job performance.
The Quinnipiac University Swing State Poll, released Thursday, found just 29 percent gave the governor poor job marks. Another 9 percent were undecided.
The results show that Kasich’s popularity remains high in Ohio, even as he has slipped in his home state in polling for the Republican presidential nomination.
Kasich was a distant third among Republican voters for the GOP 2016 nomination, drawing support from 13 percent in the Buckeye State, the same Quinnipiac survey found. Real estate mogul Donald Trump led with 23 percent support. Eighteen percent said they favored retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
In late August, when Quinnipiac last polled in Ohio, Kasich led Trump 27 percent to 21 percent. No other Republican candidate received more than 7 percent then.
The governor’s job approval marks remain a factor, said Peter A. Brown, the Quinnipiac poll’s assistant director.
“Gov. John Kasich’s big card was his enormous popularity in Ohio, generally considered the most important swing state in the November election,” Brown said when the presidential results were released Wednesday.
