In honor of the National Federation of Music’s annual November Parade of American Music theme, a “Bells, Ivories, and Voices” program will ring out unique arrangements of American folk tunes and patriotic songs on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Prospect Street United Methodist Church (PSUMC), 185 South Prospect Street in Marion.
Marion Lecture Recital Music Club’s Julie Kubbs and Ednita Vaflor have organized a program that is open to the public free of charge, with a special invitation extended to our local Veterans to come particularly to enjoy the musical tribute portion that honors their service to our country.
In the program’s Bells segment, the PSUMC Bells of Praise, directed by Julie Kubbs and accompanied by pianist Gary Flach, will perform: “Just a Closer Walk”, a traditional folk song, Arr. Bruce Greer; “Give Thanks” which quotes Pachelbel’s “Canon”, Arr. John F. Wilson; and, in memory of September 11, 2001, “An American Medley”, which incorporates “America the Beautiful”, “God Bless America”, and “My Country ‘Tis of Thee”, Arr. Anna Laura Page. Additionally, a Pleasant Elementary Tone Chimes ensemble will perform.
The Ivories will be represented by pianists Gary Flach, Joyce Miller, Julie Kubbs, and Jim Anderson in a Piano Ensemble (8 hand!)performance of “Patriotic Medley” that includes “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, “Yankee Doodle” and “America the Beautiful”, Arr. Phyllis Gunther.
The Voices will feature an audience participation sing-a-long led by Ednita Vaflor and Gary Flach: “This Is My Country” by Don Raye & Al Jacobs; “A Tribute to our Armed Forces Medley” to honor our Veterans; “Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor” by Emma Lazarus and Irving Berlin. The song’s lyrics come from American poet Lazarus’ sonnet written in 1883, “The New Colossus”, which was engraved in 1903 on a bronze plaque mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty. The MLRMC program will close with the singing of “God Bless America” by Irving Berlin.
