Marion unemployment rate increase in November

The unemployment rate for Marion County increased in November to 5.0 percent, up from 4.4 percent in October 2015. The jump did not come from additional people returning to the available workforce, but from 200 additional residents stating they were unemployed.

Marion County was not alone in the increase in November. All surrounding counties also saw higher rates and Ohio’s rate, which is seasonally adjusted, increased slightly as well.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 4.5 percent in November 2015, up from 4.4 percent in October. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 9,900 over the month, from a revised 5,427,100 in October to 5,437,000 in November 2015.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in November was 255,000, up 6,000 from 249,000 in October. The number of unemployed has decreased by 41,000 in the past 12 months from 296,000. The November unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 5.2 percent in November 2014.

The U.S. unemployment rate for November was 5.0 percent, unchanged from October and down from 5.8 percent in November 2014.

Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 9,900 over the month, from a revised 5,427,100 in October to 5,437,000 in November 2015, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.

Goods-producing industries, at 898,100, added 3,300 jobs over the month. Job gains in construction
(+3,900) outweighed job losses in manufacturing (-600). Mining and logging did not change. The private service-providing sector, at 3,778,200, added 3,700 jobs. Employment gains in leisure and hospitality (+6,000), professional and business services (+2,800), other services (+1,000), information (+300), and financial activities (+200) surpassed losses in trade, transportation, and utilities (-5,700) and educational and health services (-900). Government employment, at 760,700 added 2,900 jobs in local (+1,400), federal (+800), and state (+700) government.

From November 2014 to November 2015, nonagricultural wage and salary employment grew 75,800. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 12,100. Manufacturing added 11,600 jobs in both nondurable goods (+8,500) and durable goods (+3,100). Construction added 2,200 jobs. Mining and logging employment decreased 1,700. The private service-providing sector added 58,800 jobs. Gains were seen in all industries: leisure and hospitality (+17,700), educational and health services (+17,500), trade, transportation, and utilities (+11,500), financial activities (+8,100), information (+1,800), other services (+1,700), and professional and business services (+500). Government employment increased 4,900 in local (+2,600), state (+1,900), and federal (+400) government.
