The unemployment rate for Marion County increased a bit on December 2015 to 5.2 percent, up from 5.0 percent in November 2015. The rate was just slightly lower than the previous year when it stood at 5.3 percent in December 2014.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in December 2015, up from 4.5 percent in November. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 15,200 over the month, from a revised 5,436,300 in November to 5,451,500 in December 2015.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in December was 269,000, up 14,000 from 255,000 in November. The number of unemployed has decreased by 23,000 in the past 12 months from 292,000. The December unemployment rate for Ohio was down from 5.1 percent in December 2014.
The U.S. unemployment rate for December was 5.0 percent, unchanged from November and down from 5.6 percent in December 2014.
Total Nonagricultural Wage and Salary Employment (Seasonally Adjusted)
Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 15,200 over the month, from a revised 5,436,300 in November to 5,451,500 in December 2015, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.
Goods-producing industries, at 900,000, added 3,500 jobs over the month. Job gains in manufacturing (+3,200) and construction (+500) outweighed job losses in mining and logging (-200). The private service-providing sector, at 3,791,700, added 12,400 jobs. Employment gains in trade, transportation, and utilities (+6,300), educational and health services (+4,900), professional and business services (+2,200), and other services (+2,200) surpassed losses in financial activities (-1,600), leisure and hospitality (-1,200), and information (-400). Government employment, at 759,800 decreased 700 as losses in local (-1,100) and state (-100) government exceeded gains in federal government (+500).
From December 2014 to December 2015, nonagricultural wage and salary employment grew 82,700. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 13,700. Manufacturing added 14,500 jobs in both nondurable goods (+11,700) and durable goods (+2,800). Construction added 1,000 jobs. Mining and logging employment decreased 1,800. The private service-providing sector added 68,300 jobs. Gains were seen in all industries: educational and health services (+23,900), trade, transportation, and utilities (+19,500), leisure and hospitality (+10,200), financial activities (+6,900), other services (+4,800), information (+1,800), and professional and business services (+1,200). Government employment increased 700 as gains in local (+1,700) and federal (+400) government outweighed losses in state government (-1,400).
