Showing for the first time at a theatre in Marion, movie-goers will have the chance to see ‘Race,’ the incredible true story of gold medal track and field champion Jesse Owens. The newly released film will play at the historic Marion Palace Theatre on March 18, 19 and 20, 2016.
This drama, based on true events, focuses on legendary black athlete Jesse Owens (Stephan James) and his inspiring journey to overcome racism at home and abroad. Owens became a track and field sensation while attending the Ohio State University in the early 1930s. With guidance from Coach Larry Snyder (Jason Sudeikis), he gained national recognition for breaking numerous records. At the same time, heated debates continued among Olympic committee members Jeremiah Mahoney (William Hurt) and Avery Brundage (Jeremy Irons) who were conflicted over the site of the 1936 Olympics in Nazi Germany. Ultimately, the United States decided not to boycott the Games; and Owens seized the opportunity to show Berlin and the world that he was the fastest man alive.
