Marion crash kills one, sends six more to hospital

The Marion Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a three vehicle fatal crash that occurred on Sunday, June 5, 2016 at approximately 7:00 P.M. The crash, which occurred on State Route 309 at County Road 162 in Marion Township, killed one man and injured six more.

The Patrol said that a 2015 Hyundai Elantra driven by Lindsay D. Hempy was traveling southbound on County Road 162 and 2008 Dodge Ram driven by Robert L. Lawrence was traveling westbound on State Route 309. Hempy allegedly failed to yield for a stop sign and pulled into the path of the Dodge Ram. The Ram struck the Elantra on the driver’s side. The Elantra then struck a 2006 Honda Accord who was eastbound on State Route 309 and stopped at the intersection. The Elantra came to rest off the southwest corner of the intersection.

The Hyundai Elantra sustained disabling damage in the crash and was driven by Lindsay D. Hempy, 24, of Marion. Hempy sustained incapacitating injuries in the crash and was flown via MedFlight Helicopter to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. The Patrol said she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. There were two passengers in the Elantra.

The front seat passenger, Timothy Gullett, 49, was flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus via MedFlight helicopter. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. The Patrol reports that he was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

The back right passenger, Karson Hempy, 4, was also injured and was flown to Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH. He was in a car seat.

The Dodge Ram sustained disabling damage in the crash and was driven by Robert L. Lawrence, 60, from LaRue. Lawrence sustained non-incapacitating injuries in the crash and was transported to Marion General Hospital. The Patrol said he was not wearing his seat belt. There were three passengers in the Dodge Ram.

The front seat passenger, Deborah Lawrence, 63, of LaRue, sustained non-incapacitating injuries in the crash was transported to Marion General Hospital. Seat belt use was unknown.

The back middle passenger, Kylynn M. Blankenship, 1, of Marion, sustained non-capacitating injuries in the crash and was transported to Marion General Hospital. Kylynn was secured in a child seat at the time of the crash.

The back right passenger, Olivia Kissling, 11, of Mt. Gilead, sustained non-incapacitating injuries in the crash was transported to Marion General Hospital. Seat belt use unknown.

The Honda Accord sustained minor damage in the crash and was driven by Arielle M. Anderson, 18, of Marion. She was wearing her seat belt and was not injured in the crash.

Assisting agencies on scene were Marion Township Fire/EMS, Pleasant Township EMS, Med Care Ambulance, MedFlight, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital helicopter.

Alcohol and drug impairment are unknown and the crash remains under investigation.
