Downtown overpass closed for emergency repairs

The Ohio Department of Transportation has closed the State Route 4/State Route 423 bridge, better known as the State Street overpass, in downtown Marion for up to two weeks for emergency repairs.

ODOT had already hired a contractor earlier this summer to start repairing the State Street bridge. On Thursday, while those crews were chipping away at the old concrete under the bridge, they noticed that there was more damage to the concrete supports. There was so much “bad concrete,” ODOT engineers decided it was better to be safe and close the bridge to all traffic.

The State Street bridge between Center Street and George Street carries two lanes of northbound traffic. Traffic will now be detoured to SR 95 east to US 23 north to SR 4.

The Prospect Street overpass is not impacted by this closure.

The repairs to the 51 year old bridge will include strengthening the supports that hold the deck with new concrete. Weather permitting, the State Street bridge will be open within 10 days to two weeks.
