Marion unemployment rate up in June

The unemployment rate for Marion County spiked to 5.1 percent in June 2016, up from 4.6 percent in May. The increase comes with 100 fewer people in the available workforce and an additional 100 people reporting as unemployed.

The June 2016 rate matches the rate from the year prior, but is lower that two years prior when it stood at 5.9 percent. Leading up to June, the local rate had decreased every month since January when it was 6.0 percent.

Ohio’s unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in June 2016, down from 5.1 percent in May. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 12,400 over the month, from a revised 5,484,600 in May to 5,497,000 in June 2016.

The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in June was 291,000, down 9,000 from 300,000 in May. The number of unemployed has increased by 17,000 in the past 12 months from 274,000. The June unemployment rate for Ohio was 0.2 percentage points higher than the June 2015 rate of 4.8 percent.

The U.S. unemployment rate for June was 4.9 percent, up from 4.7 percent in May and down from 5.3 percent in June 2015.

Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 12,400 over the month, from a revised 5,484,600 in May to 5,497,000 in June 2016, according to the latest business establishment survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor (Bureau of Labor Statistics) in cooperation with ODJFS.

Goods-producing industries, at 905,500, added 4,000 jobs over the month. Job gains in manufacturing (+2,600) and construction (+1,700) surpassed losses in mining and logging (-300). The private service-providing sector, at 3,813,400, lost 1,200 jobs. Employment losses in educational and health services (-6,500), financial activities (-2,500), and other services (-1,200) exceeded gains in professional and business services (+6,900), leisure and hospitality (+1,500), and trade, transportation, and utilities (+600). Information did not change from May. Government employment, at 778,100, increased 9,600 in local (+5,100), state (+4,100), and federal (+400) government.

From June 2015 to June 2016, nonagricultural wage and salary employment grew 81,600. Employment in goods-producing industries increased 6,200. Construction added 9,900 jobs over the year. Mining and logging lost 3,000 jobs. Manufacturing employment decreased 700 as losses in durable goods (-7,500) outweighed gains in nondurable goods (+6,800). The private service-providing sector added 65,500 jobs in educational and health services (+20,300), leisure and hospitality (+19,000), trade, transportation, and utilities (+10,900), financial activities (+6,200), other services (+5,600), professional and business services (+3,100), and information (+400). Government employment increased 9,900 as gains in state (+9,800) and federal (+1,300) government offset losses in local government (-1,200).
