Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam

On Thursday, July 28, 2016, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office received reports of a person claiming to be with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office that was calling residents of Marion County and claiming to be with the warrant division. The person then advises the people he has called that they owe fines and/or costs and, to avoid a warrant or criminal charges, they need paid.

Residents in Delaware County reported receiving similar calls as well.

“The Sheriff’s Office does not make calls of this nature,” Sheriff Tim Bailey stated. “These are fraudulent calls and a scam if you receive one.”

Sheriff Bailey advises residents to report these calls to law enforcement if you receive one and do not give the caller any personal information.

Sheriff Tim Bailey urges anyone with information reference to these phone calls to contact the Marion County Sheriff’s Office at 740-382-8244, or the TIPS line at 740-375-TIPS (8477).
